SPLOST Overview Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) is an important tool of local governments in regards to funding essential city projects. By funding certain capital projects from this revenue source, local governments can ensure that their community receives essential services while keeping our citizens’ property tax burden at a minimum. SPLOST proceeds help the City of Ashburn pay for a wide variety of projects which include: Street and Sidewalk Projects; Water, Sewer, and Drainage Projects; Construction, Expansion, and Improvements to City Buildings and Facilities; and the Acquisition of Rolling Stock for the City’s Police, Fire, and Street Departments. SPLOST Highlights Fire Station #2 SPLOST has recently helped to finance the renovation of Fire Station #2 which is located on West Washington Avenue. These improvements consist of an addition of one bay, construction of a training classroom, and the addition of various other features. Donna Avenue and Carter Street Paving The City of Ashburn has recently completed the paving of Donna Avenue and Carter Street. Under the supervision of Street Superintendent Carlton Webb, City crews assisted in the preparation of the sight for the laying of asphalt. This allowed the City to keep costs down, while ensuring that the final product was of good quality. Funding for the project was provided by the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax and was matched 50% by the Georgia Department of Transportation. These were two of the few remaining unpaved streets in the City's inventory. Shealy Circle and Shealy Road are to be paved in the near future in conjunction with drainage improvements in that area. Stormwater Drainage Improvements SPLOST has allowed the city to make various stormwater drainage improvements throughout the city. By utilizing this funding source for these purposes, the city has made many its roads safer and passable during a high rainfall event. Rolling Stock Acquisition SPLOST has allowed the City of Ashburn to update its capital equipment tremendously in recent years.
